Finishing the second school - July 2007

We are trying to catch up on all the things that have happened in the past 18 months. Please keep checking back as we work to update the site. There have been many wonderful things such as finishing the second school in 2 years, helping to start 2 radio programs - one in Jalapa with PIEAT and one in La Chureca with the youth, many workshops for teachers as well as the general community, more efficient stoves, and home organic gardens. As always, we try to bring education with these programs.

Children Raise Money for School Furniture

Children Raise Money

On July 1, 2006, 4 children, Jonathan and Taylor Watkins, and Reana and Alana Young-Morrison raised money for the Nueva Esperanza school project by setting up a table in front of King Soopers in Gunbarrel, CO. They sold organic Nicaraguan coffee, pine needle baskets from a Jalapian women's coop, cloth grocery bags and organic cotton T-shirts. In a little over 2 hours, they raised almost $300, enough to buy almost 1/2 of the furniture needed for the Nueva Esperanza school.

A visit to La Chureca

La Chureca

The Spring 2006 delegation visited La Chureca. La Chureca is the largest landfill in Managua. It is home to more than 1500 people, some of whom have been living there since the late 1960's. For the residents, unemployment is basically 100%, drug use is extremely high (glue being the default drug) and prostitution starts with children as young as 9 years old. The first half of the slide show is from an outing in which we took about 40 children from La Chureca to Lake Granada. The second is from our visit to their home, the landfill known as La Chureca. There is a documentary about the Los Qunichos school project and the people of La Chureca currently in post-production. Check back for updates.

Building a school in Nueva Esperanza

Building A School

The Spring 2006 delegation started a school project in Nueva Esperanza. Nueva Esperanza is a small community of about 200 people. It is located about 6 miles north of Jalapa close to the border of Honduras. They have no electricity and until the fall of 2005, they had a single water tap in the center of the community for all to share. Their community leader, Don Santiago, is an incredible man who has helped to lift this community. Because of his respect in the Jalapian Valley, Nueva Esperanza was chosen as the site for the first school built by PIEAT.. This project was largely made possible by the efforts and fund raising by a group of students from Naropa University in Boulder Colorado.

Building the Nueva Esperanza Water Project

Nueva Esperanza Water System

The planning for a water system for Nueva Esperanza was started in 2002 and construction was finished in the Fall of 2005. The project was started by The Boulder/Jalapa Friendship City Project and later became a joint project with La Agencia Adventista para el Desarrollo y Recursos Asistenciales (ADRA). ADRA oversaw the actual construction and provided food for the community while they built their own water system.
